Josh as a boy and teen

Josh was big and tall for his age, extremely active and loved sports, but he also suffered from a host of ailments from early on. These included a slight heart murmur, ear infections, migraines, a hernia — and a cyst in his left femur which weakened the bone, and precipitated it breaking when he was checked on the ice during a youth-hockey game when he was 6. That landed him in a body cast for several months, during which he missed many weeks of school.

Still, nothing slowed him down once the cast was off. Josh was constantly biking or skateboarding or snowboarding, or playing baseball or practicing karate. In high school, he showed talent on the basketball court.
